One By One Metre Space was an exhibition and artistic response to the changing landscape surrounding Singapore’s Sungei Road Flea Market. Through works by Adrian Tan, Debra Ong, Jennifer Ng, Ling Yang Chang, and Mindy Tan, the project examined ideas of transitory space, urban change, memory, and exchange.
Taking the dimensions of a flea market vendor’s plot as a conceptual framework, the exhibition reflected on questions of value, displacement, and the social life of objects within Singapore’s rapidly transforming cityscape.
The project examined the site’s histories, tracing objects and narratives while fostering exchanges between the disappearing flea market and contemporary art economies.
